  • Ringo Starr – “Photograph”, “You’re Sixteen” And “Six O’Clock”

    "Ringo" by Ringo Starr (1973)

In 1974 while visiting my older brother in Invercargill at the very bottom of New Zealand’s South Island, I bought the Ringo Starr album “Ringo”, featuring the single “Photograph”, which went to No. 1 in America.

Another song from the album, also a Number 1 hit in the USA, was “You’re Sixteen”.

I also rather like “Six O’Clock”, penned by Paul McCartney.

Here is the album version of “Photograph”, which was co-written by another former member of The Beatles, George Harrison, and produced by Richard Perry:

I’m not sure when this live version of “Photograph” was performed, it is Ringo Starr & His All-Star Band, featuring John Entwistle of The Who on bass, Billy Preston on keyboards and Ringo’s son Zak Starkey on drums (at least I think it is, I had to change the video, this one is 1995 apparently):

As both John Entwistle and Billy Preston are no longer alive, it must have been a while ago.

And here is “Six O’Clock”, not a hit, but I like it:

I have found an interesting connection with Ringo Starr: a fellow (earlier) graduate of Massey University in Palmerston North, New Zealand, the late Dave Jordan, wrote one of the songs on his 1976 album “Rotogravure”.

  • Jon English – “Turn The Page” and “Behind Blue Eyes”

Jon English has been a leading light of the Australian music scene for decades, but I mainly remember him for his version of “Turn The Page” (by Bob Seger) in 1975.

I also remember him playing Judas Iscariot in the Australian version of the musical “Jesus Christ Superstar” in the Seventies.

Although Australian, English was actually originally, well, English, emigrating shortly before turning 12. In fact he had his 12th birthday just before the family reached Australia.

Jon English has been playing music since his early teens, and apart from performing solo and in bands has also been involved in creating and producing larger productions himself.

Most recently he performed on Australia Day at the January 2010 Celebrate Australia! event.

This is Jon English singing “Turn The Page”:

I also found this Jon English cover of The Who’s “Behind Blue Eyes”:

Not sure when he recorded this, but some people seem to think his was the original version (The Who released their first version in 1971).

Whatever. Like I said, I primarily associate Jon English with “Turn The Page” – and “Turn The Page” with Jon English…

  • Roger Daltrey – “Giving It All Away”

It’s my birthday today, so I thought for this post I’d pick a singer also having a birthday today:

Roger Daltrey, lead singer of The Who, with “Giving It All Away”, from his first solo album “Daltrey” in 1973.

I’ll feature supergroup The Who separately, this one’s just for Roger…

And here it is, first the studio version of “Giving It All Away”:

And this is a video of Roger Daltrey singing “Giving It All Away” in 1973:

    Happy Birthday Roger!
